Hi Adrian, I followed up on Vic's suggestion and got in touch with Access Solent, part of Student Support Services. They recommended we go to a drop in session later this week, but as Sam's need was a bit more urgent than that we found a local guy through googling who was initially cheap, but also turned out to be decent and professional. We ended up spending £800 on a new machine which, having tested it in the city centre for a couple of days, seems ideally suited to purpose, i.e. will sustain a medium-to-fast walking pace over 6 or 7 miles without charging and is small enough to get into Sam's room. We looked at rental to tide us over until Sam's Disabled Student's Allowance came through, but it would have been cheaper to use cabs, although less convenient, admittedly. The DSA mobility grant will hopefully cover some of the cost of the scooter. Anyway, he's back at uni now having been patched up (he strained a big hip muscle last week and couldn't walk at all, let alone with his sticks), and I am back to worrying about him! His twin sister went off to Exeter this weekend and thankfully seems to have taken to uni life like a fish to water. Phew! Thanks to all, on- and off-list for their suggestions.
