Thanks for all the info guys, will pass on the Colehill details to my daughter

Ralph, it may well be but the system is so slow as to be unusable and not being 
able to stick a boot cd in makes life more difficult. It could equally be file 
corruption knocking the cpu to 100%, either way it need to be fixed. 
Unfortunately the laptop had my daughter college course work on it and like all 
good student she has no backups of the data
