/dev/sdb is not removable. It is a 20G IDE disk.

I have not tried John's solution yet. It is what I was going to
investigate this morning, except that the system wouldn't boot. It timed
out and 
It gave me an error Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/ f7a37.... (=my sda5 = my
linux root partition) does not exist. 

But when I rebooted and chose an older linux version, here I am. 

Not sure what happened, but will test it out again before making any
other changes.
