This now gives me a error: no argument specified on selecting an option

it, but I wouldn't have a clue how to fix it.

Hi Peter

I don't know if this will help or not but have you looked at

http://www.supergrubdisk.org/

Basically it is a boot disk that will we re-write\repair your grub
configuration based on what it finds when it scans your PC.

I have used it a couple of times on my PC which includes a PC that dual
boots with a windows OS and it has worked ok

Hope it helps

Tim

Tim, Thanks,

I did have a copy of Rescatux that I had made a few months ago (0.26),
and it worked. I have waited until I have had three boots before
replying because I have discovered before that the first may be OK, but
then it reverts.

Interestingly, I compared //boot/grub/grub.cfg before and after and it
was identical. That made me look at some dates and it had not been
updated.

Neither had

//etc/default/grub or the files in

//etc/grub.d

Most of the files in //boot/grub/ had been updated to the time/date that
I ran rescatux, except the ones with 'grub' in their name.

Because etc/default/grub had not been changed and still had my changes
in it, I wonder if they were incorporated in the rebuild or not!

Anyway, I am back to 'normal' again, and recommend rescatux.

Well I can't answer as to how it works or why your files have not changed, I am just thankful in those moment when it all goes belly up for me, it has been able to resolve the issues for me. Maybe I won't learn how to rebuild grub from scratch but at least I learnt what to do to resolve a problem.

Glad it worked for you.
