Try pressing F3 after opening the 'home' folder and you should get side by side views which you can then change one side to anywhere, CD, USB, even network (it takes a bit of trying to connect). It works for me on 11.04 and is the best way I've found to open 2 views of folders as trying to open 2 views of 'home' does nothing.

In Unity the only way I found to do this was to open up the Home folder,
and then 'open up a new window' and make that the destination. Not so
easy. Does it have the equivalent of Nautilus (Gnome) or Dolphin (KDE)?
