This perhaps shows the difference in philosophy of some in the private sector
to those in perhaps another part of the private sector who support FOSS:

http://www.bsa.org/country/News%20and%20Events/News%20Archives/enGB/2010/enGB-10072010-endorsement.aspx

In a way I might suggest we are into an argument about what are meaning of the
terms "private sector" and "free market".

Apologies for not replying sooner.

I know some progress has been made with regard to CESG and Open Source and will
dig out a few links on this.

>"Enterprise Architect" civil servants for info.

Sounds good. I'll send you details across next week once I'm back in contact
with HMG about this.

Cheers

Mark

One of the main issues in this department is the insistence on security
accreditation and the push to use CESG approved products.? The problem with OS
is that you need time and money to submit the product for evaluation and gain
some meaningful EAL certification; individual projects cannot afford this.?
SUSE enterprise and RedHat Enterprise are listed there albeit older versions as
those organisations can see some benefit of funding this.? I wanted to pilot a
system on Ubunutu LTS with SE and use MySQL (or Postgres) instead of MSSQ;? you
end up spending a great deal of time showing how it can be (1) secure (2)
supportable.?

We are in a laughable position where people will, when faced with a
need for a routing MTA in a DMZ, select exchange and have to put in
2 ADs and and exchange box just to provide the MTA; just because
"you never get sacked for usign M$".

I am interested in your BCS events and if you send me the programme
I will forward it to the "Enterprise Architect" civil servants for
    info.

Or also allowing the vested interests to lobby it more to water it

Clive, Peter, Walter,

I would be interested in learning about setting up a network, and
especially in joining in to create a self-help group.

Please count me in.

Regards,

Charles Miller
Wareham
My setup:-
* New Aleutia PC with Ubuntu 11.04/LibreOffice (possible dual-boot
with XP later)
* New Aleutia PC for XP/Office 2003 (or possibly Debian/Red Hat/other
if I can find a Linux variant that can handle office work as well as
XP/Office 2003 did (I don't find Ubuntu/LibreOffice good enough)
* VAIO Laptop with Win7/Office 2007 (for use with projector for
presentations and other out of office uses) which will either go back
to XP or forward to Linux when I get around to it.
(The above comprises the PCs in the new 'PAMPRU office' group)
* PC with Win7/Office 2003 (will be removed from the group when the
new PC with XP/Office2003 is ready to take its place) This may become
the sole XP PC if both Aleutias and the VAIO get a suitable
XP-comparable/MS-compatible Linux office system)
* Colour Laser office printer, network and USB connections.
* 2x USB office scanners, one A4 multi0sheet and one A3, and have a
network-to-USB converter option as well as the Kensington USB Switcher
now in use.
* New 1GB 8-port ECO switch (not yet installed)will replace
power-hungry 1 gig Netgear)
* Several Network HDDS of 1 and 2 TB each (all sizes in RAID 1 config)
*AEG 0.6Kva UPS for all except laser printer and scanners
(Leyboard, dual mice, sound, and all USB peripherals switch from one
PC to the other when NumLock tapped twice quickly)

Hi Charles

Happy New Year.

Can I suggest that we pass on any info to you as it's going to be tight
around my computer (it's in a corner 3' table).
I'm going to re-arrange so we can see the screen but am very restricted.
May bring a photo on Tuesdaysmeet to show the area!
Now to get together all the info on my system 'as is'; that should be a
help to sort it out.
See you on 10th?
