Hi Simon, I'll echo Sean - to say hello and also, I'm afraid, to state my uselessness re. Mac hardware. I played with a Mac II long long ago and loved it at the time but have not touched one since. However I am sure I have seen a lot of geeky guys with Macs at conferences etc running various Linux systems, and have a colleague of sorts who runs Ubuntu very happily in a virtual machine on a Mac. Not sure about a native install but I am sure it's possible.
Funnily enough I am also a clone of sean re. Neal Stephenson - have almost all his books and thing Cryptonomicon probably his best - (nothing to do with the fact that Linux played a cameo role in the story line ;-) - although the Baroque Cycle is worth the effort too.
