Yes we did it during Thursday lunchtime.  However, we couldn't copy the home 
directory to the temporary directory in /media/home because we kept getting 
errors.  Instead of using rsync as in the link you gave, we used cp -rp, so 
presumably it was because the /home directory was in use at the time.  We even 
tried creating a temporary user and doing it from there using sudo, but no go.

In the end, we just reinstalled from scratch (he hadn't got much in his home 
directory yet).  After we set it off it largely did it's own thing and we 
finalised it during tea break.

Can't imagine installing Windows like that...
