Well it did kick off just as my daughter's login notification came up.  But 
what could it have been doing for all that time?

I'm no expert, but is that likely to have worked since the machine wasn't 
responding to keyboard input?  (This should have the highest priority AFAIK).

I wondered about going through the Magic SysRq sequence 
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key), but decided that this would 
undoubtedly kill the errant process before I could find out what it was.  In 
the event, it ended before I could get control.
