When you used wicd did you change the settings to use wext? I have a
hazy but insistent memory that this was key to getting the card working
correctly with any security settings. I can also remember that wicd and
network-manager didn't play nicely together and had to disable
network-manager.

Hi Dean, Yes, it did have preferences set to wext. And I have removed
networkManager. I note that a lot of people on the forums still didn't
have success at this point, and I also am stuck.
I am now at the state where I am going to download to USB a new
installation of Ubuntu and start again, in case it is some of the
historic stuff that I have done with this computer that is affecting it.
It gives a bad passphrase error even though I have checked the
passphrase in /etc/wicd/wireless_settings.conf and they are identical to
the router.
I will not be at the meeting on Tuesday, but I'll buy you a beer when we
do meet.
