Hi,
Just in case anyone else is trying to diagnose faults on a machine,
MEMTEST on
Ubuntu 12.10 is Broken! see:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/memtest86+/+bug/1071209.
My son complained that his games were running a bit sluggishly so I
gave him
the latest Kubuntu 64 bit disc to run MEMTEST from. We then spent a
good
chunk of Christmas day and the best part of yesterday, proving that
there was
nothing wrong with his memory.
Had it not failed Test 7 so comprehensively, we'd probably have only
run one
or two passes, but it took a while to find that there was a problem
with the
tool, not the machine.
We think his problem was dust in the airways by the way (it's an MSI
gaming
laptop).
Terry,
Sounds like the problem I had on opensuse a couple of months ago -
reassuring that it is a bug and not the memory.

That reminds me, I was going to suggest that everybody pulls their
microwave oven out and cleans the filter before they cook Christmas food
in it. They work much better with a good airflow, and this caused the
overheating and failure of my previous oven. Happy new year.
