Hi Peter, You didn't say what operating system you are using.
In Windows and most versions of Linux this would be done from the power management options. You can choose to turn off the display and/or hard disks after a certain time, suspend, hibernate or power down the computer after certain times etc.
It may be worth looking at one of the suspend or hibernate options as that puts it in a low power state where you can resume from where you left off.
Have a look around the power options and see if there is something that does what you want.
