Clive, two naïve questions:
(1) What's the output of: $ ls -lR /media/CAW1 ?
(2) Are you trying to write to the disc as root, or as yourself?

I have an external disc similarly set up:
johnp@zeno:~$ mount
---irrelevant stuff omitted---
/dev/sdb1 on /media/disc0.ext3 type ext3(rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=udisks
johnp@zeno:~$ ls -l /media
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2013-01-13 22:23 disc0.ext3
johnp@zeno:~$ ls -l /media/disc0.ext3
total 20
drwxr-xr-x 3 johnp johnp 4096 2013-01-13 22:23 johnp
drwx------ 2 root root 16384 2013-01-12 22:47 lost+found

Obviously only root can create files in /media/disc0.ext3 but johnp can
do so in /media/disc0.ext3/johnp and that is where I keep my backups.
If needed, I would make further directories for users besides myself,
and so protect ourselves from each others' mistakes.

Good luck. John
