Modern TVs are mainly HD 1080, AIUI. You may find http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e5/Vector_Video_Standards2.svg/960px-Vector_Video_Standards2.svg.png useful when trying to see the differences, e.g. the aspect ratio matches HD 720. Others will have more specific advice, I'm sure.
