I've tried using 'htop' ( a rather more feature-ful version of 'top' :
apt-get install htop) in situations like this; you can sort by
memory-use to see what programs are using you physical and/or virtual
memory. But sometimes it doesn't seem to tell the whole story: its
account of what memory is being used by active applications and the
rest does not seem to tally with the overall picture. But it might
give some clue...

How big is your swap partition? ( shell command 'free' will

Is there any program or anyway to find out what programs
are using
my swapdisk\space??
The reason I wish to know is that since installing the latest
SolydXK update my swap file usage has gone through the
roof. On my
4gb of memory, it has gone from 2% to 5% pre update to
around 80%
to 85% and I am running no more than I was pre update. My PC
normally runs 24/7. I have just logged out and logged back in
again (with 13 days and 7hrs running on the clock) and my swap
file is showing 2% used which is the normal, but since the
update
I have noticed three times now that my swap file usage has
crept
up to 80%+. I normally only use a large amount of swap
space if I
have several gimp windows open.

Thanks Victor, I have htop installed and did in fact use it but it did
not give a particularly clear view of what was going on which is why I
asked if there was a more specific program for looking at the swap file.
I will wait till it happens again and then use htop and go from there
and if required ask the questions with the result of htop to hand.
