The only thing I can think of is it may not see the HDMI monitor when it's powered up, depending on the KVM, and not output a signal even when it's switched in. See hdmi_force_hotplug in http://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/config-txt.md for how to set HDMI as the default.
