I've found that Discord is another decent alternative. They don't appear to have a native Linux app just yet, but the web interface works just fine - and better than Skype's own one does. https://discordapp.com/ Although the trouble is convincing others who still use Skype and either don't notice, or don't mind, it's issues to change over.
