I have to run occasional Windows apps on this PC, and doubled the RAM to 16GB (not an expensive option) so that I could allocate a full 4GB in VBox to the Windows 7 system. Perhaps a similar move would help the speed problem. I keep the machine running 24/7, so the update time problem mentioned by Patrick would be minimised.
