Over the past few days, I have reinstalled 25.04 and all of the packages that I had been using prior to the upgrade. All of the features that have previously worked have now been restored, eg remote connections, Chromium, Konquerer, etc, with the exception of clickable buttons in Thunderbird.
Provably a salutary lesson about not being to keen to upgrade to the latest version ;-(
