Bill,

Welcome to the Dorset LUG.
-Calcium in the water
I am curious.  Do you get a lot of calcium deposits, in the Dorset area,  on
tap openings and in your kettle?  Where is your water sourced?
In Surrey we have a high calcium content in the water supply, so  all kinds of
items in contact with water  [taps/shower head/kettles/steam irons]  will  get
clogged up with a crusty deposit, where water evaporates or heats up.
In the  Chalky Chilterns/Buckinhamshire  its worse.  Drips on the shower glass
and in the sink will leave a noticeable drip deposit if you leave them to dry.
Our water is mostly abstracted from chalk streams....   I believe that there are some artesian wells in the County, but they will also be laced with calcium.  We invested in a water softener, but they are quite expensive to buy and not cheap to run.
-Bournmouth-Christchurch
I am making some research into possible areas to relocate,
So,  I am looking out for features that I will come in handy.
- Linux group,
Yep :-)
- Community workshops for  project works,  eg electrical appliances, fibreglass
on water craft/boards,  arts workshops,
- allotment space,
Can't really help on that; I live in a village (recently renamed a town) on the other side of the BCP conurbation.
- proximity to Lidl/Aldi,
They are like fleas on a dog (reproducing rapidly).
- U3A groups,
etc, etc,
Again can't help.
Got any pointers to facilities  or  guides to the Poole-Bournmouth-Christchurch
 area?

This might be a good start: https://www.bcpcouncil.gov.uk/
