I still get a notification on the status bar as an Up Arrow with a circle
around it and Blue dot when there are updates. This dot is red for a security
update.  I think I have it set to weekly, but seem to get them every day.

Hi,

In what seems like a retrograde step, Ubuntu has removed the routine updates
notifications facility in order (apparently) to make the experience less
confusing (see
https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/07/ubuntu-26-04-update-notifications-disabled).
Unfortunately the problem also affects Kubuntu and I couldn't fix the problem
by using the command 'gsettings set com.ubuntu.update-notifier
show-updates-status-icon true' as described in the link (no such schema).

As stated in the article, security updates are apparently done automatically in
the background, but without notifications, the only way to find out if there
are update is to run 'sudo apt update' in a shell.  I don't have a real problem
with that, except it is easy to forget it.

More importantly, as I see it, some users will never find out about pending
updates, leaving their system in a potentially degraded state,
