This is 100 times more apparent for dosemu. When, ~15 years ago, I needed a DOS emulation under linux, dosemu was already there, so it _looked_ like it would be a good idea to fix it and not to write a new one. And then it was too late to reconsider. The dosbox guys started on windows, so they didn't have any legacy code to start from, and they used this opportunity to just write the things properly. The work on dosemu includes 2 stages: first you spend power fixing some subsystem, and then - the same amount of power is spent to rewrite it from scratches. For me dosemu was a great experience, its an excellent project to learn from, because learning on other's mistakes is a quick way to advance. :) From that perspective you can't learn that much from dosbox, so I don't regret the choice.
