What is "console", and what is "won't work"? There can be a KMS console, or FB console, or a pure-text console. Do you really need -f /etc/dosemu/dosemu.conf?
An answer to your question is in dosemu.conf itself: --- # use 'console' video (direct video ram access). Default: # (auto) -- use only if KMS is not active # $_console = (auto) # use the cards BIOS to set graphics and allow direct port i/o.
