Yes, it's not particularly practical for downloading, but it would be great
for CD's.

That said, if these CD's become widely distributed, then even your
downloadable installer could say "please insert a WCU CD now, or click here
to download the required components", much like the bit of the VS.NET
installer which lets you install updates from the web or from a CD.

Seems like there are a hundred ways to get the same things done, and a lot
of effort to pick the right ones - even for a simple app to be distributed
by both download and CD. :(

Would be nice, but getting this installed through a web download is
still not a good idea, or?

But a "special" version (not all the VS stuff, jsut an installer
starting after inserting) would be GREAT. Something that you can buy or
burn yourself. There is still enough room for your own installer in it
:-)

I think the Windows Component Update CD is a great one-stop-shop for all
your .NET components needs. I get the impression that the WCU CD will be
shipping with lots of MS products in the future.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could ship it with our apps, too? After all,
all we're trying to do is make installing MS' components as painless as
possible, and I think the WCU does that very nicely.

Not a bad idea. After all, the framework itself has some not too nice
requirements.

We include it in our WISE installation now (using WISE for VS.NET - we
help them debug this), because this is the one ting that we are pretty
sure the user does NOT have :-) The rest (like IE version etc.) is
already pretty good in distribution.
