Right, that is my understanding, but not what I'm seeing on the page. I'm
using Windows authentication, (and <identity impersonate="true"/>) yet the
user.identity is correct (has the expected user name) but the wp version
shows NT\AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.  Any ideas?

Assuming you're using Windows authentication, there is no difference.
