Larry, Since this is OT, I'm replying privately rather than through the list.
You have two separate issues: (1) the 5 spaces, and (2) the Re: prefix. Regarding the second issue, this is just how the list works. How else would you want it to work? It would be confusing to have the replies to a message thread and the original message be indistinguishable through their subject lines. There are two ways to follow a particular thread: one is to use the list's web interface, which includes "Next topic in thread" and "Previous topic in thread" buttons. The other is to sort your messages chronologically, then search for a distinguishing word or phrase in the subject line of the particular thread, in your e-mail program. The latter is what I normally do. I hope your realize that the 5 spaces has nothing to do with following a particular thread. It is also something which used to happen to me, but which magically disappeared when I got a new e-mail provider. In other words, it is an issue with your provider -- not the list. It is also something I would dearly love to get back, so if you happen to find out how (other than changing e-mail providers), PLEASE let me know. I used to find it very convenient to have all of the DOTNET list entries indented, with respect to my other (personal) e-mails. Regarding your P.S., in 9 months, I've never found out to whom issues like this should be addressed. When my indentations disappeared, I did the same as you (and OT post to the list).
