Do you have any third-party plug-ins to Visual Studio? I've had significant slowness problems with Visual Studio after installing a particular code analysis plug-in (that will remain nameless). It never locked the machine up, but it does take about 10 times as long to start, and sometimes freezes VS for a minute or so. If you've got any, that would be my first suggestion - uninstall them and see if it helps.
