Patterns and Practices @  http://msdn.microsoft.com/practices  and  Guidance on Patterns & Practices: Security (Building Distributed Applications) - is an excellent resource to start with.
 
 
Although in a distributed application, I would suggest a mixture of patterns. Like
1. Factory pattern for Database related stuff.
2. Facade Pattern - having common interface for set of subsystems (in this case most likely it would be (plant automation system with subsystems like warehouse, inventory, stores .. )
 
On the other hand, if you are have these subsystems to speak then you could think of developing loosely coupled systems - publish-subscriber pattern, or MSMQ sort of thing.
