Problem with AppSettings

The application uses couple of assemblies to do the database operations. The assemblies read the connection string from the applicationname.exe.congif file. The application was working fine for quite sometime.   After couple of months suddenly it started to give errors. I tried to debug it and I found that the assemblies are not able to read the appsettings. I mean Appsetttings["keyname"] is returning null.   I am not sure what changes have been done to the system.
