Hi there!

I've just managed to have Plymouth work on the DDL development version.
This software is replacing Splashy [1] used on Gondwana for the CD boot
screen, between the very first boot screen and the activities menu
(Splashy is not available on Debian Squeeze). I finally found how to
have Plymouth work on a larger set of computers (hopefully), using a
so-called “framebuffer” instead of native “KMS” video drivers which
only work with a subset of Intel, Ati and nVidia chipsets.

That said, the problem now is to take benefit of one interesting
feature of Plymouth: animated boot screen. Currently I've copied the
default Debian Plymouth theme named “spacefun” [2] and just replaced
the background image to make it more DDL-like. I uploaded a screencast
[3] of the animated boot it is leading to, with a spaceship flying
above the witch! Also I urge our graphic designers to think about what
animation we can make: should our characters and our mascot walk,
smile, jump, wink, wave their hands, etc.?

Warning: the screencast life time is 1 month, it'll disappear
automatically after.

Of course any implementation of your unbounded creativity as a Plymouth
theme to be embedded into DDL is welcome :). It would be nice to have
it on 2011-11 but I know the schedule is very short, despite this
release is going to be quite late. Do your best!

Cheers,
JM.
