Hello! This email is particularly intended to our Italian contributors, you'll understand why very quickly, but not only indeed. As Verbiste seems to be designed to be able to conjugate in any language, it is not limited to Italians if you feel the desire to offer a free conjugation tool to the children of your country :).
Maybe you've seen that the French version of DDL has always had a tool called Verbiste [1] in order to conjugate verbs, French verbs initially. Since the version shipping with Debian Squeeze, and thus our development version of DDL, Verbiste is advertised as being able to conjugate Italian verbs too. [1] http://perso.b2b2c.ca/sarrazip/dev/verbiste.html As I'm learning Italian because of my recent holidays in Sardegna :), I had the opportunity to try to use Verbiste for Italian verbs and, well, found that it doesn't know very basic verbs like vivere (to live) or dire (to tell). Looking at its source code, I saw that very few Italian verbs are defined, which explains the poor results I obtained. The program tells it knows only 121 Italian verbs, but more 7000 French ones… So the question is how to help improving Verbiste, for Italian but for any other language fitting the logic of this conjugation tool. As I understood the data files of Verbiste, we have to provide a list of verbs with their conjugation model, typically another verb for which full conjugation is already defined. There are then 3 steps to fully add a language in my opinion: 1. find a list of all verbs and whether they are conjugated as another verb or not, as a text file to avoid retyping all! 2. find or extract a list of model verbs and irregular verbs 3. find the full conjugation for model verbs and irregular verbs, or retype it! With this we should be able to have Verbiste work for any other language. The question is to find the web resources at least for the point 1) but preferably for 3) too. To me, it's no use shipping Verbiste in DDL Italian if there aren't most of verbs in it. So I tend to think that Italian verbs is a priority because the implementation has already started, which explains the title of this mail. The question is then: who is interested in providing the required data for Italian or any other language? We can of course start by contacting the author to be sure of the procedure to add a new language or improve Italian, if there are people interested. -- Cheers, JM.
