Show your settings with dovecot -n? Is there a high load in the system? Are there non-plaintext logins? Maybe this would help: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot-cvs/2007-May/008732.html Although that would mean that a successful authentication lasts for longer than 3,5 minutes, which is a bit unlikely. But maybe you have some weird clients. :)
