userdb returns it, so I guess currently it's not doing that? Either have
LDAP return it itself, or kludge around that by adding it into:

plugin {
  home = /mnt/virtual/mail/%d/%n
  ..
}

mail_debug=yes is also helpful while debugging.

You should rather use a different directory. See
http://wiki.dovecot.org/VirtualUsers#homedirs
