Oh, you had sql and passwd users. So I assume you want sql users to use maildir and passwd users to use mbox? In that case use: mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u And override it for sql users in dovecot-sql.conf: user_query = select .., 'maildir:/var/mail/%d/%n' as mail, ..
