Yes, it's expected. I'm not entirely sure if it's a good idea always, but I was mainly thinking about these "unseen" virtual folders. You really don't want the message to go away immediately when you open the message. So to really get rid of these non-matching messages you'll have to use EXPUNGE command ("purge", "compact", whatever in IMAP clients).
