I use an Android phone (2.2 now but originally set up under 2.1). My Dovecot server uses a self signed certificate. When I tried to set up IMAP access to dovecot using plain text passwords and TLS (disable_plaintext_auth = yes) with the android built in client, it would just silently fail.
