I have run RC versions and well as RELEASE versions on FreeBSD and I always
compile with (/opt path relative to version):
./configure \
--prefix=/opt/dovecot2.3 \
--with-ioloop=kqueue \
--with-notify=kqueue \
--with-sql=yes \
--with-mysql \
--with-zlib \
--with-bzlib \
--with-ssl=openssl
gmake install
