Finally figured it out—it was a simple syntax error of using $ for variables 
instead of %, eg ${user | username}. Replaced them with % signs and I am now 
able to authenticate. No progress on the pigeonhole issue though I assume that 
is an Alpine issue and may be fixed by package maintainers.
