Thanks. That was my problem. It now seems to work with the latest from Github 
on OpenBSD 7.8. Thanks to everyone for your help. 

One more quick question. I'm planning to try to install 2.4 in parallel with 
2.3 on OpenBSD until I can get everything moved over and wonder if there is any 
easy way with the current Makefiles to install under somewhere else other than 
/usr/local/?
