I'd like to give a feedback on the issue I was struggling with. The online configuration converter helped me to sort out any remaining problems after manual adjustments. The permission problems probably arised because passwd wasn't defined properly and hence I guess it couldn't properly attach uid to a given user. Now that the config has been properly converted, things are running fine.
Thank you Aki for the online converter: it was quite useful. Pointed out some things I missed after reading documents.
