I'd like to give a feedback on the issue I was struggling with.

The online configuration converter helped me to sort out any remaining
problems after manual adjustments. The permission problems probably arised
because passwd wasn't defined properly and hence I guess it couldn't
properly attach uid to a given user. Now that the config has been properly
converted, things are running fine.

Thank you Aki for the online converter: it was quite useful. Pointed out
some things I missed after reading documents.
