I can't reproduce this. This works fine in my tests:

mail_plugins {
  virtual = yes
}
namespace virtual {
  mail_driver = virtual
  mail_index_path = ~/virtual
  mail_path = /etc/dovecot/virtual
  hidden = yes
  list = yes
  prefix = virtual/
  separator = /
  type = private
  mailbox all {
    auto = subscribe
  }
}

What's your doveconf -n and what's the exact error message you're getting?

It was mainly intended to prevent accidentally using "index" layout with it.
I'll see about getting maildir++ back.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Perhaps that the namespace separator must
be the same? That is configurable.
