Dear Saros Developers,

I talked to the IT staff about the recent events (unplanned shutdown of our VMs
on Monday).

Here is what happened:
 * During the last weekend, the memory of the VM host reported an ECC error.
The IT stuff decided to put the host in maintenance mode and migrate the VMs.
 * Due to some VMware idiosyncrasies I don't understand, the pure existence of
old snapshots during a migration leads to massive I/O and computation for
resolving the big delta between the old snapshotted version and the current
state of the VM.
 * Since the resolving of just *one* of our snapshots took 30 minutes and the
IT staff wanted to address the actual issue at hand, the VMs were shutdown
completely.

Lessons learned:
 * VMware snapshots are not a good way to maintain backups for a long time span.
 * For the given scenario (system update on the VMs) we still can use snapshots
-- but we aren't allowed to create them ourselves. From now on, we'll have to
file a ticket for the staff, they will create a snapshot, we will update our
system, and after a week or so, the staff will delete the snapshot.
 * For backup purposes, the IT staff will set up a backup job, which will run
on a daily basis. Apparently snapshots are not the weapon of choice here.

@Holger: For the latter I have a few more questions:
 * Scope: Do we need a complete backup of the whole system or just a some
directories?
 * Frequency: Do we need a daily backup? Or does a less often backup suffice?

And: Did you already install the SSH keys of the IT staff on saros-build?

Best Regards,
Franz
