Thanks for this sensible fix.
I suggest an improvement:
The above behavior should only hold if follow mode was never used before by
this user in this session.
If it was used before, however, the default should be to follow the same
user again that was followed last time.
Actually selecting a user is then only required to change that default (and
presumably very rarely).

Removed the random follow mode from the follow mode button
in the toolbar.
