Well, I *did* monitor the system load during my git fetch calls -- otherwise I would not have bothered the mailing list: There was no Jenkins job running, CPU was nearly idle, Gerrit's web interface was as responsive as one could wish for, and so on ...
Furthermore I tried calls from outside the university's network, from within, and even on saros-build itself. The ssh connections were always slow, http(s) connections were not fast, but ok. All I asked for was "does anyone else suffer" -- obviously nobody did, so I got this problem all for myself. End of story.
