Hi Graham, STF stands for "Saros Testing Framework", a framework for - setting up a network of multiple machines running - an XMPP server - a network traffic manager (that inserts latency and errors) - Saros/E - instructing the Saros nodes what to do (remote control) - observing whether they behave correctly.
Even with STF, programming such tests is cumbersome, so we do not have many STF tests. But some. SWTbot is at the heart of the STF. I am not sure what is the best place to start reading about STF.
