Interesting. I just did a 2+2 in the bar, expecting it to give me 4, and it
launched a google search. I'll admit I didn't do much more investigation
than that.

Depends on how they built it - quite often in release stuff you can find the
strings of dialogs etc. buried in the files with a hex editor. It's not
really surprising though, given the "xml" files that they install are some
strange proprietary format.

The presence of the wsdl files (which I didn't investigate much beyond
seeing they were there) would indicate that there was development of SOAP
stuff, but that could be a bluff - who knows.

I think all this will require is for Slashdot to carry this story, and a)
their server will melt, and b) if there is a GPL violation, it will be
discovered.

I think part of it is that Google released all the XML RPC search tools
recently, which got people thinking. Not to mention any class/course you
take on SOAP mentions web searching as one of the possible benefits.
Reasonable doubt in other words.

Do I think this person/people were inspired by DQSD? Yes. It looks like
they found a bunch of GPL apps that they really liked, and did a knockoff,
bundling them all together, and charging money for them.

That being said, if they did that, they should be distributing source - in
which case they're still entitled to charge anything they want (and their
own customers are entitled to turn around and sell/give away the source if
they want)

In my opinion it's a weakness with GPL - I prefer the Artistic License that
perl is (was?) distributed under, mind you in a case like this, it doesn't
matter what license you used.
