If you enter more than this (e.g. hexconv 10000) you appear to get the value from the first 4 digits only (in this case 1000) 1. It would be useful to indicate that the maximum limit has been reached and give an error message instead of the 'wrong' value 2. Could you increase the number of characters that are processed?
