I think maybe it's on account of the HUGE nested table structure that's
generated to present the categories and searches. I seem to recall seeing
that IE has problems with tables and CSS. Could be related to the
magically-expanded-People-and-Places bug.

Anyway, the Silver theme renders perfectly readable text now, so it's no
biggie.
