Hi John, > Does someone have time to boil down the essentials of it for me? > In layman's terms what is it?
We've finally found some proper workarounds for the XP SP2 problem. If we host IE properly inside of a deskband, we can communicate with the WebBrowser control, and affect the security decisions it makes (i.e. if script is allowed to be run in the browser, etc.) From what I've learned so far, not all things can be controlled, but many can. This solution also means no lessened security for the end-user, unless someone manages to inject malign code into DQSD, something I think we should do our best to prevent as well (read-only ACL on the Program Files directory is probably a good start). It's no more efficient (that I know - not sure what the MS-based solution we've been using so far does) than the existing stuff, but it works better with SP2. > What do I need to get it running? I sent a preview DLL to the list on Sunday (Subject: Next-gen?) - drop me a private e-mail if you want a copy, and I'll send it to you. > Should I run it along side DQSD 3.1.8.0 (or 3.1.9.0 I > haven't upgraded yet)? > > Can it stand alone from normal DQSD? Pretty much along side. It loads and displays search.htm from C:\Program Files\Quick Search Deskbar, so if you have DQSD installed, it's going to run DQSD. The keyboard hook will be setup again, so if you already have DQSD 3.1.x running, you'll get the message about the being unable to set up hook. All in all, it still needs all of DQSD except for the registry entry that causes search.htm to be loaded inside of the task bar, so yes, you need DQSD installed. > Is it fully functional (can I uninstall DQSD)? Almost fully functional. It can do what DQSD can do, but only with all of DQSD installed, cf above. I have some ideas for improvements, but I'm not sure what I can pull through. > Should I back up/save my local*.* files and local search folder? Not really necessary, the new DLL doesn't touch anything in your DQSD dir, except that it reads search.htm.
