I just checked in a quick change to search.htm and preferences.js that allow
you to set a preference in localprefs.js:

      /* Display help text setting. Setting this to false will cause the
'Quick Search'
         * and 'Display ? for help' strings to not be displayed at all.
         */
         displayHelp = true;


Let me know if there are any problems.  (I know that I'm violating my
suggestion of no more features for the final 2.5.8 release... oh well.)
